Sweet Charity

In addition to knitting gifts and things to sell, I also do a lot of charity knitting. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I do think it's important to give back to the community, and I like to give of my effort and time, not just my money. Since I love knitting, doing it for charity doesn't feel like a burden at all.

The annual membership dues for the HP knitting guild are $20 and 6 hats. The guild collects the hats at the December meeting and then donates them to either a homeless shelter or a women's shelter. I've already started mine for this year and have 2 done already. I really have been getting a lot of knitting done during my commute.

I also have made a lot of baby hats for charity. A friend of mine works for a social service agency that aids impoverished families with babies who are either premature or disabled, and I give her baby clothes to give to her clients. I especially like doing baby hats because they're small and don't take much time or yarn.

What I'd really like to do is start a knitting ministry at the church I attend. I have that book "Knitting Into the Mystery" that outlines how to do exactly that, but I haven't been organized enough to do it. Some day I'll get my act together...really.

That is cool! I've actually started that at our church. I've done some research and there are three different types in this country. I think we will do all three, one at a time. I actually am suppose to be printing out the patterns at them moment...but couldn't resist checking out everyones blogs!

How did you start it? Did you post a flyer or have something put in the church bulletin? I'd be interested in hearing how you got it off the ground.
