New Baby, New Hat

A colleague of mine is expecting a baby boy in July so I made a hat for him.

The yarn is a cashmere, wool blend left over from another project.

My Philosophy: Make Something Beautiful, and then Give It Away

Back in the summer, I was obsessed with knitting the dishcloth pattern published in the first Mason-Dixon knitting book. As I was knitting a cloth, it occurred to me that the stitch pattern would make a beautiful blanket. Lo and behold, Afghans for Afghans sent out a call for baby blankets for a hospital in Kabul. So I decided to make one using the dishcloth pattern, and here is the result. In this view, you can see the stitch pattern better. The brown yarn that frames the whole thing is Lion Brand fisherman's wool in natural brown. The other 7 colors are a bunch of wool oddballs I had left over from other projects. I love it and and thinking of making one for myself, on a larger scale of course, and with a more sophisticated palette. I know I blog about Afghans for Afghans a lot, but it's a cause I believe in with all my heart. Train Ride from Hell

Had a horrible Amtrak trip downstate to visit my sister, complete with unnecessary, inexplicable delays and a squalling child whose silly yuppy parents forgot to bring extra food for him. (Do they not realize that, after a long day, babies need food and a nap?) The crying was so prolonged that I had to put in my earplugs (thank goodness I remembered to bring them). I felt badly for the baby, but I was cursing the parents under my breath. My only consolation is that the delays meant I had extra time to knit. Made quite a bit of progress on the Estonian lace scarf. Saw another woman on the train knitting, too. It looked like a simple baby blanket. I thought about asking her about it, but I would've had to talk over the guy sitting next to her, and that seemed a bit rude. So anyway....I'm in Central Illinois once again, ready to celebrate tomorrow, and then face a return trip by train on Tuesday. Pray for me...

Made It Home In One Piece

My return to Chicago wasn't nearly as bad as my trip on Sunday. The train was delayed by 3 hours, but since I had called ahead to find out whether it was on schedule (HA!), it just gave me more time to hang out with my sis and have lunch with her. Thankfully, we had no further delays between Bloomington-Normal and Chicago. I was in a quieter car, too, with some elderly ladies from Michigan, instead of squalling babies. I didn't knit, however. I think I'm getting sick of the Estonian lace scarf. Last night I did some work on the round baby blanket instead. At this point, I doubt I'll finish the scarf by the end of the World Cup. Ah, well...at least I tried.
